The climate emergency and the crossing of planetary limits are seriously endangering individuals and human societies, and raising serious questions about our socio-economic development model in the short and medium term. Continuing the trends of recent decades is untenable, and we are going to have to make major changes to our activities and our value-creation models, to bring them into line with planetary limits.
Against this backdrop, the focus on the responsibility of the various economic players has shifted: there has been a clear shift towards placing companies at the heart of society and making them accountable for taking account of the social and environmental challenges of their activities.
Pressure from legislators is now coupled with civil society’s expectations of companies, which must each, at their own level, demonstrate ethical behaviour that takes account of the aspirations of their stakeholders and contributes to sustainable development by encompassing environmental, social, governance and societal considerations.
Consequently, the CSR approach cannot be limited to a reporting and compliance exercise, but must enrich the company’s strategic thinking to enable it to increase the sustainability and added value of its activity, as well as the resilience of its business model, while satisfying regulatory requirements and having integrated future socio-economic transformations and potential disruptions.
