We are publishing the 9th edition of our annual study of the financial health of European electricity producers, with a special focus on Switzerland. In 2023, the European electricity market continued to invest massively in renewable energies, in a post-crisis Europe.
European electricity producers are facing increased price volatility…
In 2023, the European electricity market was highly volatile due to the geopolitical context. This instability was exacerbated by measures to promote energy efficiency and the development of renewable energies. In Switzerland, the trend remains positive, thanks in particular to improved availability of French nuclear power.
… against a backdrop of falling energy consumption in Europe
In 2023, electricity consumption will have continued to fall, while gas consumption will have reached an all-time low: between 2021 and 2023, gas consumption in Europe will have fallen by 24%, while electricity consumption will have fallen by 6% over the same period.
Switzerland faces the challenge of long-term energy supply
Despite significant progress in renewable energy capacity, Switzerland continues to face the challenge of security of supply. The Mantelerlass, a law passed in 2024, aims to double the production of renewable energy by 2050.
